1 Lieber Theophilus! Viele Leute haben schon den Versuch gestartet, alles mal aufzuschreiben, was so bei uns in den letzten Jahren abgegangen ist.

2 Als Grundlage dafür gab es ja die Berichte von den Augenzeugen, die das mitgekriegt haben, wie Gott alle seine Versprechen eingehalten hat.

3 Ich habe diese Berichte alle genau durchgelesen und dann kam ich auf die Idee, dir diese ausführliche Zusammenfassung der wichtigsten Ereignisse mal aufzuschreiben.

4 Du wirst bemerken: Alles, was man dir erzählt hat, hat sich tatsächlich auch so abgespielt! Es ist alles total wahr.

5 Und zwar war das so: In der Zeit, wo Herodes noch in Judäa das Sagen hatte, lebte ein jüdischer Priester in der Gegend, der Zacharias hieß. Zacharias gehörte zu der Gruppe der Abija-Priester, seine Ehefrau Elisabeth kam aber aus der Priesterfamilie vom Aaron.

6 Beide waren hardcoremäßig mit Gott unterwegs, sie taten alles genau so, wie Gott es wollte, und lebten streng nach den religiösen Gesetzen und Vorschriften.

7 Sie hatten keine Kinder bekommen können, weil Elisabeth unfruchtbar war. Außerdem waren sie mittlerweile auch zu alt dafür.

8 Eines Tages passierte dem Zacharias ein krasses Ding. Er war im Tempel gerade bei der Arbeit, seine Gruppe hatte Schicht.

9 Wie üblich wurde wieder ausgelost, wer in dem Tempel den Weihrauch anzünden sollte. Das Los fiel diesmal auf Zacharias.

10 Draußen standen in der Zeit sehr viele Leute, um mit Gott zu reden.

11 Als Zacharias in dem Raum gerade rechts von der Stelle stand, wo man dieses Rauchopfer startet, kam plötzlich eine Nachricht von Gott rein ─ in Form eines Engels. Dieser Engel stellte sich rechts neben den Altar, wo immer das Opferzeugs verbrannt wurde.

12 Zacharias gefror das Blut in den Adern. Er bekam tierische Angst.

13 Der Engel meinte aber gleich zu ihm: „Hallo Zacharias! Bleib locker, Gott hat auf dich und deine Gebete gehört. Deine Frau, die Elisabeth, die wird für dich noch einen Sohn kriegen, und der soll dann Johannes heißen.

14 Dieser Sohn wird dich total glücklich machen, und nicht nur dich, auch viele andere Menschen!

15 Gott hat was mit ihm vor. Er wird radikal mit Gott leben, keine Drogen oder Alk zu sich nehmen. Dafür wird er schon vor seiner Geburt abgefüllt sein mit einer ganz besonderen Kraft von Gott, nämlich mit seinem Geist.

16 Und er wird dafür sorgen, dass viele Israelis sich wieder auf ihren Gott einlassen.

17 Er wird so drauf sein wie der Prophet Elia und er wird alles klarmachen für Gott. Er wird dafür sorgen, dass die Väter wieder mit ihren Kindern klarkommen und sich ihnen zuwenden. Die Leute, die weg waren von Gott, werden ihn wieder finden. Er soll dem Meister für seine Arbeit gut vorbereitete Menschen überlassen."

18 „Wie soll das denn gehen?", fragte Zacharias etwas überrascht. „Ich bin Rentner und meine Frau ist auch nicht mehr die Jüngste!"

19 „Ich stell mich am besten erst mal vor: Ich heiße Gabriel und bin einer der Engel, die Gott am nächsten kommen dürfen. Er schickt mich, um dir diese gute Nachricht zu übermitteln, das ist mein Job!

20 Aber weil du mir das nicht glaubst, wirst du erst mal nicht mehr reden können, und zwar so lange, bis das Baby geboren ist. Du wirst sehen, ich hab dir die Wahrheit gesagt, es wird alles so abgehen, wenn es an der Zeit ist."

21 Inzwischen waren draußen schon zig Leute und warteten auf Zacharias. „Wo bleibt der nur?"

22 Als er dann endlich wieder rauskam, konnte er nicht reden. Damit war eine Sache klar, irgendetwas war ihm da drin begegnet. Mit Zeichensprache erklärte er ihnen, dass er gerade eine Vision im Tempel gehabt hatte, er konnte ab da nichts mehr sagen.

23 Er blieb dann noch die sieben Tage da, bis er Feierabend von seinem Priesterdienst hatte. Erst dann ging er wieder nach Hause.

24 Nur kurze Zeit später war Elisabeth tatsächlich schwanger. Fünf Monate blieb sie alleine auf ihrer Bude und zeigte sich niemandem.

25 „Ich bin Gott so dankbar", sagte sie, „dass ich noch ein Kind kriege, das ist so schön! Nun kann mich niemand mehr von oben herab anmachen, weil ich keine Kinder bekommen kann."

26 Elisabeth war gerade im sechsten Monat schwanger, da schickte Gott wieder den Engel Gabriel los. Diesmal sollte er nach Nazareth gehen, eine Stadt, die in Galiläa liegt.

27 Da lebte ein Mädchen, das noch Jungfrau war, die hieß Maria. Maria war mit Josef verlobt, der aus der Familie vom David stammte.

28 Gabriel klopfte bei ihr an und sagte: „Hallo Maria! Gott will dir ein Riesengeschenk machen! Er hat dich unter Millionen von Frauen extra ausgesucht!"

29 Maria stand etwas unter Schock. Sie überlegte schnell, was er mit dieser seltsamen Begrüßung meinen könnte.

30 „Keine Panik!", redete der Engel weiter. „Gott hat dich wahnsinnig lieb, er liebt dich einfach so und er hat etwas ganz Besonderes mit dir vor.

31 Du wirst bald schwanger werden, und dann wirst du einen Sohn bekommen, der soll dann Jesus heißen!

32 Er wird ganz groß rauskommen, man wird von ihm sagen, dass er der Sohn von Gott ist. Er wird von Gott auf den höchsten Posten gesetzt werden, er wird ein König sein, genauso, wie David einer war.

33 Er wird das Sagen haben über ganz Israel, und seine Macht wird nie zu Ende gehen."

34 Maria war etwas verwundert: „Aber wie soll das denn bitte gehen? Ich hab noch nie mit irgendeinem Mann Sex gehabt!"

35 „Also, das ist so: Der Geist von Gott wird dir ganz nahe kommen. Gottes Kraft wird dafür sorgen, und darum wird das Kind auch etwas ganz Besonderes sein, es wird ‚der Sohn von Gott‘ genannt werden.

36 Pass auf, selbst Elisabeth, mit der du ja verwandt bist, ist jetzt im sechsten Monat schwanger, und die ist schon im Rentenalter. Alle Ärzte haben gesagt, dass sie unfruchtbar wäre, und jetzt das …

37 Für Gott ist nichts unmöglich, Maria!"

38 „Ich will für Gott alles geben, ich gehöre ihm, alles, was du gesagt hast, soll auch so passieren."

39 Maria hatte dann später einmal die Idee, mal schnell auf Besuch bei Elisabeth vorbeizuschauen. Die wohnte in den Bergen von Judäa.

40 Als sie in das Haus vom Zacharias kam, umarmte sie Elisabeth.

41 In dem Augenblick, als Maria „Hallo Elisabeth" gesagt hatte, hüpfte das Baby in Elisabeths Bauch. Auf Elisabeth kam plötzlich die Kraft Gottes runter und sie sagte laut zu Maria:

42 „Du bist von Gott ganz besonders gesegnet worden, mehr als alle anderen Frauen! Und das, was da in dir wächst, dein Baby, das ist erst recht voll gesegnet!

43 Womit hab ich das überhaupt verdient, dass die Mutter von meinem Herrn mich besuchen kommt?

44 Verstehst du, als du mich vorhin begrüßt hast, ist das Baby in meinem Bauch vor Freude gepogt!

45 Du kannst so froh sein, dass du Gott geglaubt hast! Alles, was Gott dir versprochen hat, wird auch passieren!"

46 Maria war sehr froh, als sie das hörte: „Danke Gott, ich bin dir so dankbar!

47 Alles in mir freut sich über dich, du bist mein Gott, du hast mich gerettet!

48 Gott hat mich gesehen, obwohl ich nur eine stinknormale Frau bin. Alle Menschen, die in Zukunft leben werden, werden mich einmal toll finden und mich ehren.

49 Gott hat was ganz Großes mit mir gemacht, ihm ist nichts unmöglich, er ist ganz besonders, er ist echt heilig.

50 Er liebt uns total und diese Liebe gilt allen Menschen, die ihn respektieren.

51 Er hat große Muskeln, er kann Wunder tun! Menschen, die sich sonst was einbilden, wird er alt aussehen lassen.

52 Er hat Regierungen gestürzt und Sklaven befreit.

53 Menschen, die Hunger hatten, kriegten bei ihm was zu essen, aber Menschen, die satt und reich waren, sind bei ihm leer ausgegangen.

54 Er hat uns versprochen zu helfen, und er hat dieses Versprechen nicht vergessen. Er liebt uns.

55 Er hat das schon vor Ewigkeiten Abraham und seiner Familie versprochen."

56 Maria blieb noch drei Monate bei Elisabeth zu Besuch, erst dann ging sie wieder zurück nach Hause.

57 Nach neun Monaten war es für Elisabeth an der Zeit, und sie brachte einen Jungen zur Welt.

58 Das machte schnell die Runde im Ort, und alle Freunde und Bekannten freuten sich mit ihr, dass Gott so gut zu ihr war.

59 Acht Tage nach der Geburt gab es eine kleine Feier, wo Verwandte und Freunde eingeladen wurden. Dort wurde so ein religiöses Ritual mit dem Baby gemacht, bei dem man ihm die Vorhaut vom Penis abschnitt. Das war bei den Juden so üblich. Die Verwandten waren der Meinung, der Sohn sollte nach seinem Vater genannt werden: Zacharias der Zweite.

60 Aber Elisabeth war da anderer Meinung: „Nein, er heißt Johannes!"

61 „Was? Wo hast du den seltsamen Namen denn her? Keiner in deiner Familie heißt so!"

62 In der Hoffnung, der Vater würde ein Machtwort sprechen, fragten sie ihn, wie er seinen Sohn nennen wollte.

63 Er ließ sich ein Stück Papier und einen Stift bringen und schrieb darauf: „Sein Name ist: Johannes!"

64 Im selben Augenblick konnte Zacharias wieder sprechen und als Erstes lobte er Gott.

65 Diese Story machte überall die Runde und alle waren total baff, als sie das hörten.

66 „Was wird wohl aus diesem Jungen mal werden? Ist doch eindeutig, dass Gott etwas ganz Besonderes mit ihm vorhat!"

67 Sein Vater Zacharias wurde plötzlich mit der Kraft von Gott abgefüllt. Er sagte dann prophetisch:

68 „Gott von Israel, er ist der Größte! Er ist bei uns vorbeigekommen und hat uns einen Ausweg geschaffen!

69 Er hat aus der Königsfamilie vom David jemanden ausgesucht, der uns alle retten wird.

70 Schon die alten Propheten haben das gewusst, denen hatte er es versprochen.

71 Er wird uns retten, wenn unsere Feinde hinter uns her sind. Er rettet uns vor den Leuten, die uns hassen.

72 Schon zu unseren Vorfahren war er gut, er hat immer zu dem ganz besonderen Vertrag gestanden, den wir mit ihm geschlossen hatten.

73 Dieses Versprechen, das er unserem Urvater Abraham gegeben hat, löst er jetzt ein.

74 Er holt uns aus der Zwickmühle raus, er befreit uns von unseren Feinden, damit wir alles für ihn geben können, ohne Angst im Nacken.

75 Wir wollen ihm radikal dienen und tun, was er sagt, für immer!

76 Und von dir, kleiner Junge, wird man noch einiges zu sagen haben. Man wird dich als Prophet vom obersten Gott bezeichnen. Du wirst alles vorbereiten, damit Gott dann richtig loslegen kann.

77 Du wirst seinen Leuten sagen, wo es längsgeht, du wirst ihnen erklären, wie sie frei von ihren Schulden werden können, die sie bei Gott haben.

78 Gott verzeiht uns, weil er uns so sehr liebt! Sein Licht wird uns die Richtung zeigen.

79 Dieses Licht wird für alle Leute da sein, die im Dunklen leben, die Angst vor dem Tod haben, die vom Tod bedroht werden. Dieses Licht wird uns den Weg zeigen, wie wir Frieden finden können." ─

80 Je älter Johannes wurde, desto besser lernte er Gott kennen. Schon als Jugendlicher ging er oft in die Wüste. Irgendwann fing er dann an, in der Öffentlichkeit in Israel aufzutreten.

1 Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to draw up a narrative concerning those matters which have been fulfilled among us, 2 even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word, 3 it seemed good to me also, having traced the course of all things accurately from the first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus; 4 that thou mightest know the certainty concerning the things wherein thou wast instructed.

5 There was in the days of Herod, king of Judæa, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. 6 And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless. 7 And they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years.

8 Now it came to pass, while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course, 9 according to the custom of the priest’s office, his lot was to enter into the temple of the Lord and burn incense. 10 And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the hour of incense. 11 And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense. 12 And Zacharias was troubled when he saw him, and fear fell upon him. 13 But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: because thy supplication is heard, and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John. 14 And thou shalt have joy and gladness; and many shall rejoice at his birth. 15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and he shall drink no wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb. 16 And many of the children of Israel shall he turn unto the Lord their God. 17 And he shall go before his face in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to walk in the wisdom of the just; to make ready for the Lord a people prepared for him. 18 And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years. 19 And the angel answering said unto him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of God; and I was sent to speak unto thee, and to bring thee these good tidings. 20 And behold, thou shalt be silent and not able to speak, until the day that these things shall come to pass, because thou believedst not my words, which shall be fulfilled in their season. 21 And the people were waiting for Zacharias, and they marvelled while he tarried in the temple. 22 And when he came out, he could not speak unto them: and they perceived that he had seen a vision in the temple: and he continued making signs unto them, and remained dumb. 23 And it came to pass, when the days of his ministration were fulfilled, he departed unto his house.

24 And after these days Elisabeth his wife conceived; and she hid herself five months, saying, 25 Thus hath the Lord done unto me in the days wherein he looked upon me, to take away my reproach among men.

26 Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And he came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee. 29 But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this might be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. 31 And behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS. 32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Most High: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: 33 and he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 And Mary said unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee: wherefore also the holy thing which is begotten shall be called the Son of God. 36 And behold, Elisabeth thy kinswoman, she also hath conceived a son in her old age; and this is the sixth month with her that was called barren. 37 For no word from God shall be void of power. 38 And Mary said, Behold, the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word. And the angel departed from her.

39 And Mary arose in these days and went into the hill country with haste, into a city of Judah; 40 and entered into the house of Zacharias and saluted Elisabeth. 41 And it came to pass, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit; 42 and she lifted up her voice with a loud cry, and said, Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb. 43 And whence is this to me, that the mother of my Lord should come unto me? 44 For behold, when the voice of thy salutation came into mine ears, the babe leaped in my womb for joy. 45 And blessed is she that believed; for there shall be a fulfilment of the things which have been spoken to her from the Lord. 46 And Mary said,

My soul doth magnify the Lord,

47 And my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour.

48 For he hath looked upon the low estate of his handmaid:

For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed.

49 For he that is mighty hath done to me great things;

And holy is his name.

50 And his mercy is unto generations and generations

On them that fear him.

51 He hath showed strength with his arm;

He hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their heart.

52 He hath put down princes from their thrones,

And hath exalted them of low degree.

53 The hungry he hath filled with good things;

And the rich he hath sent empty away.

54 He hath given help to Israel his servant,

That he might remember mercy

55 (As he spake unto our fathers)

Toward Abraham and his seed for ever.

56 And Mary abode with her about three months, and returned unto her house.

57 Now Elisabeth’s time was fulfilled that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son. 58 And her neighbors and her kinsfolk heard that the Lord had magnified his mercy towards her; and they rejoiced with her. 59 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that they came to circumcise the child; and they would have called him Zacharias, after the name of his father. 60 And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John. 61 And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name. 62 And they made signs to his father, what he would have him called. 63 And he asked for a writing tablet, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all. 64 And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, blessing God. 65 And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judæa. 66 And all that heard them laid them up in their heart, saying, What then shall this child be? For the hand of the Lord was with him.

67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying,

68 Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel;

For he hath visited and wrought redemption for his people,

69 And hath raised up a horn of salvation for us

In the house of his servant David

70 (As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets that have been from of old),

71 Salvation from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;

72 To show mercy towards our fathers,

And to remember his holy covenant;

73 The oath which he sware unto Abraham our father,

74 To grant unto us that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies

Should serve him without fear,

75 In holiness and righteousness before him all our days.

76 Yea and thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Most High:

For thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to make ready his ways;

77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people

In the remission of their sins,

78 Because of the tender mercy of our God,

Whereby the dayspring from on high shall visit us,

79 To shine upon them that sit in darkness and the shadow of death;

To guide our feet into the way of peace.

80 And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his showing unto Israel.
