1 Efraim si pasce di vento, e va dietro al vento orientale; tuttodì moltiplica menzogna, e rapina; e fanno patto con l’Assiro, ed olii odoriferi son portati in Egitto.2 Il Signore ha bene anche lite con Giuda; ma egli farà punizione sopra Giacobbe, secondo le sue vie; egli gli renderà la retribuzione secondo le sue opere.3 Nel ventre egli prese il calcagno del suo fratello, e con la sua forza fu vincitore, lottando con Iddio.4 Egli fu vincitore, lottando con l’Angelo, e prevalse; egli pianse, e gli supplicò; lo trovò in Betel e quivi egli parlò con noi.5 Or il Signore è l’Iddio degli eserciti; la sua ricordanza è: IL SIGNORE.6 Tu adunque, convertiti all’Iddio tuo; osserva benignità, e dirittura; e spera sempre nell’Iddio tuo7 Efraim è un Cananeo, egli ha in mano bilance false, egli ama far torto.8 Ed Efraim ha detto: Io son pure arricchito; io mi sono acquistate delle facoltà; tutti i miei acquisti non mi hanno cagionata iniquità, che sia peccato.9 Pur nondimeno io sono il Signore Iddio tuo, fin dal paese di Egitto; ancora ti farò abitare in tabernacoli, come a’ dì della festa solenne.10 E parlerò a’ profeti, e moltiplicherò le visioni, e proporrò parabole per li profeti.11 Certo, Galaad è tutto iniquità; non sono altro che vanità; sacrificano buoi in Ghilgal; ed anche i loro altari son come mucchi di pietre su per li solchi de’ campi.12 Or Giacobbe se ne fuggì nella contrada di Siria, e Israele servì per una moglie, e per una moglie fu guardiano di greggia.13 E il Signore, per lo profeta, trasse Israele fuor di Egitto, ed Israele fu guardato per lo profeta.14 Efraim ha provocato il suo Signore ad ira acerbissima; perciò, egli gli lascerà addosso il suo sangue, e gli renderà il suo vituperio

1 Ephraim is enjoying wind, And is pursuing an east wind, All the day lying and spoiling he multiplieth, And a covenant with Asshur they make, And oil to Egypt is carried.2 And a controversy hath Jehovah with Judah, To lay a charge on Jacob according to his ways, According to his doings He returneth to him.3 In the womb he took his brother by the heel, And by his strength he was a prince with God,4 Yea, he is a prince unto the Messenger, And he overcometh [by] weeping, And he maketh supplication to Him, At Bethel He doth find him, And there He doth speak with us,5 Even Jehovah, God of the Hosts, Jehovah [is] His memorial.6 And thou, through thy God, dost turn, Kindness and judgment keep thou, And wait on thy God continually.7 Canaan! in his hand [are] balances of deceit! To oppress he hath loved.8 And Ephraim saith: `Surely I have become rich, I have found wealth for myself, All my labours -- they find not against me iniquity that [is] sin.`9 And I -- Jehovah thy God from the land of Egypt, Again do I turn thee back into tents, As in the days of the appointed time.10 And I have spoken unto the prophets, And I have multiplied vision, And by the hand of the prophets I use similes.11 Surely Gilead [is] iniquity, Only, vanity they have been, In Gilead bullocks they have sacrificed, Also their altars [are] as heaps, on the furrows of a field.12 And Jacob doth flee to the country of Aram, And Israel doth serve for a wife, Yea, for a wife he hath kept watch.13 And by a prophet hath Jehovah brought up Israel out of Egypt, And by a prophet it hath been watched.14 Ephraim hath provoked most bitterly, And his blood on himself he leaveth, And his reproach turn back to him doth his Lord!
