2 Até quando, Senhor, clamarei por socorro,

sem que tu ouças?

Até quando gritarei a ti: "Violência!"

sem que tragas salvação?

3 Por que me fazes ver a injustiça?

Por que toleras a maldade?

A destruição e a violência estão diante de mim;

há lutas, e o conflito se levanta.

4 Por isso, a lei se enfraquece,

e a justiça nunca prevalece.

Os ímpios cercam os justos,

e, assim, a justiça é pervertida.

5 "Olhem entre as nações*1.5 A Septuaginta traz os escarnecedores, e a Versão Siríaca traz traidores. e contemplem-nas;

fiquem atônitos e pasmem.

Pois nos dias de vocês farei algo em que não creriam

se lhes fosse contado.

6 Estou trazendo os babilônios,*1.6 Ou caldeus.

nação cruel e impetuosa,

que marcha por toda a extensão da terra

para apoderar-se de moradias que não lhe pertencem.

7 É uma nação apavorante e temível,

que cria a sua própria justiça

e promove a sua própria honra.

8 Os seus cavalos são mais velozes que os leopardos,

mais ferozes*1.8 Ou ligeiros. que os lobos no crepúsculo.

A sua cavalaria vem de longe.

Os seus cavalos vêm a galope,

voando como águia que mergulha para devorar;

9 todos eles vêm prontos para a violência.

Os seus bandos*1.9 O significado desse termo em hebraico é incerto. avançam como o vento do deserto

e fazem tantos prisioneiros como a areia da praia.

10 Menosprezam os reis

e zombam dos governantes.

Riem de todas as cidades fortificadas,

pois constroem rampas de terra e por elas as conquistam.

11 Depois, passam como o vento e prosseguem;

homens carregados de culpa que têm por deus a sua própria força."

12 Senhor, tu não és desde a eternidade?

Meu Deus, meu Santo, não morreremos.

Senhor, tu designaste essa nação para executar juízo;

ó Rocha, determinaste que ela aplicasse castigo.

13 Os teus olhos são tão puros que não suportam ver o mal;

não podes tolerar a maldade.

Então, por que toleras os traidores?

Por que te calas enquanto os ímpios devoram

os que são mais justos que eles?

14 Tornaste os homens como peixes do mar,

como animais marinhos,*1.14 Ou animais rastejantes. que não são governados por ninguém.

15 O inimigo puxa todos com anzóis,

apanha-os na sua rede

e nela os arrasta;

então, alegra-se e exulta.

16 Por essa razão, ele oferece sacrifício à sua rede

e queima incenso em sua honra,

pois, graças à sua rede, vive em grande conforto

e desfruta iguarias.

17 Continuará ele esvaziando a sua rede

2 O Jehovah, how long shall I cry, and thou wilt not hear? I cry out unto thee of violence, and thou wilt not save. 3 Why dost thou show me iniquity, and look upon perverseness? for destruction and violence are before me; and there is strife, and contention riseth up. 4 Therefore the law is slacked, and justice doth never go forth; for the wicked doth compass about the righteous; therefore justice goeth forth perverted.

5 Behold ye among the nations, and look, and wonder marvellously; for I am working a work in your days, which ye will not believe though it be told you. 6 For, lo, I raise up the Chaldeans, that bitter and hasty nation, that march through the breadth of the earth, to possess dwelling-places that are not theirs. 7 They are terrible and dreadful; their judgment and their dignity proceed from themselves. 8 Their horses also are swifter than leopards, and are more fierce than the evening wolves; and their horsemen press proudly on: yea, their horsemen come from far; they fly as an eagle that hasteth to devour. 9 They come all of them for violence; the set of their faces is forwards; and they gather captives as the sand. 10 Yea, he scoffeth at kings, and princes are a derision unto him; he derideth every stronghold; for he heapeth up dust, and taketh it. 11 Then shall he sweep by as a wind, and shall pass over, and be guilty, even he whose might is his god.

12 Art not thou from everlasting, O Jehovah my God, my Holy One? we shall not die. O Jehovah, thou hast ordained him for judgment; and thou, O Rock, hast established him for correction. 13 Thou that art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and that canst not look on perverseness, wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy peace when the wicked swalloweth up the man that is more righteous than he; 14 and makest men as the fishes of the sea, as the creeping things, that have no ruler over them? 15 He taketh up all of them with the angle, he catcheth them in his net, and gathereth them in his drag: therefore he rejoiceth and is glad. 16 Therefore he sacrificeth unto his net, and burneth incense unto his drag; because by them his portion is fat, and his food plenteous. 17 Shall he therefore empty his net, and spare not to slay the nations continually?
